Title of the Innovation: Process for Extraction of Alpha Linolenic Acid from Silkworm Bombyx Pupae Oil

Brief About Innovation

Silkworm pupae oil has been extracted by Soxhlet extraction method for a long time. However, in the present technology, improved oil recovery is achieved by indigenously developed solvent extraction methods (up to 32 Percent). Another advantage of this technology is that it does not require any electrical energy as required by other solvent extraction methods such as Soxhlet and maceration methods. From silkworm pupae oil, the separation or concentration of Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) can be carried out by distillation, low temperature crystallization, urea complexation, and supercritical fluid extraction after chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis of triglycerides. In the present technology, ALA was separated by urea inclusion complexation followed by low temperature fractional crystallization, as it is convenient and no adverse effects on fatty acid quality was recorded. The improved purity of ALA was achieved by silica column chromatography. The extracted and concentrated ALA can be used for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, chemical and animal feed industry etc.
